Curator Bios

Monique Deschaines has worked at Haines Gallery in San Francisco for more than seven years as an integral part of the team to arrange exhibitions and work with artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, Kota Ezawa, Linda Connor, John Chiara, Patsy Krebs and Mike Henderson among others.  She has been a reviewer at a number of portfolio reviews and workshops across the country, and is the Director of Communications and Design for Haines Gallery. She received her Masters of Fine Arts in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2005 and completed her undergraduate work at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Diana Daniels, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art for the Crocker Art Museum since 2001, has worked on major exhibitions including Approaching Infinity: The Richard Green Collection of Meticulous Abstraction; Rebirth of a Nation by Travis Somerville; Mel Ramos: 50 Years of Superheroes, Nudes, and Other Pop Delights; Soaring Voices: Contemporary Japanese Women Ceramists; Gottfried Helnwein: Inferno of the Innocents as well as writing many essays to accompany exhibitions. Diana also coordinates the annual Crocker Art Auction of works of art by the region’s most distinguished artists.

The first weekend will have the studios open in Downtown, Midtown, Land Park & West Sac, followed on the second weekend by the studios in East Sac, Arden, Tahoe Park, Carmichael & Fair Oaks.

Cocoon by Lin Green

The Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento always has a few tricks up its sleeve when it comes to giving away free art during the Capital Artists’ Studio Tour and this weekend is no different.

CAST 2012 Exhibt at the Center for Contemporary Art

Only rich people buy original art, right? Only people who are in-the-know buy art, right? Only friends of artists buy art, right? Nope.

As you embark upon the Capital Artists’ Studio Tour, you’ll see it is a gold mine for finding new and original art that will last the test of time. Here are just a few reasons why you might consider buying original art…

Support local arts. Purchasing real art is a great feeling. By doing so, you get to support a real person who may even be your neighbor. Impact the welfare of your community and buy local art.

You are a collector. Art is a great way to start or grow a collection as a way to express yourself. Collections by subject matter, concept or medium are just a few ways to convey your interests.

Happiness. Complimenting your home or work with art you like will make you measures happier each time you see it.

Impress your friends. That’s right, I’ve said it. We all love to get compliments on our choices because they reflect upon us. Plain and simple, original art will bring you admiration.

Gifts. Buy a holiday, birthday, anniversary, or wedding gift and be able to tell the recipient about how you got to meet the artist.

Define who you are. Buying art is a direct reflection of who you are and your interests. Put a personal stake in the ground with an original art purchase and show the world your unique style.

Upgrade. Get rid of that cheesy poster from your old roommate. Upgrade with an original art piece that you love.

Invest in an artist. When you purchase an artwork, you are investing in an artist both monetarily and in a way that validates what the artist is doing, encouraging them to do more.

HOW to buy art?
Ask the artist what they want for the piece of art and if they are willing to sell it. You might consider commissioning an artist to make a piece just for you. Most importantly, bring cash, a checkbook or credit card so you are prepared to buy if you fall in love with the perfect piece of art.

Janelle Sonoda’s Pigs Home from the Fair, CAST 2012 Exhibit

The Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento is extending its hours during both weekends of the Tour so that you can come in before artists’ open their studios to pick up a map and to plan your route, all without cutting into your tour time.

When you come into CCAS, you’ll see examples of all of the participating CAST artists’ work. Talk about shorthand for planning your tour route!

Art Talk at ARTHOUSE
Friday, September 7, 6 pm–7 pm

Come out for a sneak peek of the Capital Artists’ Studio Tour and discussion on the arts this Friday, September 7 at ARTHOUSE!

CCAS Board Member and Education Committee Chair, Taylor Gutermute will host a free art talk on fine art genres, mediums and the “art” of viewing art. A bonus to this event is that the ARTHOUSE studios will be open as a preview to the Tour!

Join us for this fun-filled, lively art discussion and to “try out” what you learn from Taylor’s Art Talk with the artists in their studios. It’s a great way to kick off the Capital Artists’ Studio Tour weekend!

Taylor along with the other ARTHOUSE artists will also open their studios at during the Tour on 9/8 and 9/9.
